7 Effective Ways to Get Rid of Ants in Your Home

Ants are a common household problem, especially during the summer. They are so small, so really only the tiniest of openings is needed for them to get in. While ants don’t bite and aren’t poisonous, they can still be really harmful to us. That is because they can carry lots of bacteria that they can then transfer to us by crawling all over our food and the other things in our houses.

It’s really important to practice good pest control in order to prevent a myriad of problems in your home. How does one actually keep them out you ask? Here are seven effective ways to get rid of ants in your home:

1. Use Mint

Using mint is one of the best ways to get rid of ants in your home. This is a natural insect repellant (also a natural mouse repellant). You can plant mint around your house or use essential oil of peppermint. When using peppermint oil make sure that you are using essential oil, as there are many low-quality peppermint oils that are made with sugar and this will just attract more ants, not deter them from entering your home!

2. Use Vinegar and Water

Mix one half of white vinegar and one half of water into a spray bottle. You can use this mixture both to kill ants and to deter them from entering your home. To kill them, simply spray at them and then wipe them up with a tissue. To prevent them, spray the mixture around places where the ants may be entering, such as doorsills, windows and any other points of entry.

This method, like the others on this list, will repel ants only. It will not kill them. If you are looking to kill the ants you will need to buy traps or use insecticides. However, these homes remedies are natural and far friendlier. After all, the ants are also just trying to live their best lives, it would just be better if they didn’t do that in your house. These methods will get them out of your house without killing them.

3. Use Lemon Juice

Much like vinegar, lemon has a high acid content, making it a great natural insect repellent. To use lemon juice as a repellent, mix it with water. You can then spray it to any areas where you think the ants might be getting in. You can also use this mixture to wash your floors. Ants dislike the smell and this will keep them away.

Just make sure that you are using only lemon juice and water. Ants love sugar, so if you mix in anything sweet you’ll just be giving them what they want and not scaring them away.

4. Oranges

In fact, it’s not just lemons that will work, pretty much any citrus fruit with a high acid content will. For example, you can also use orange peels: placing them around the house or mixing them with water and using these things to deter ants. Just remember though, that orange juice does contain sugar, so you want to stick to the peels, you should not spread around their juice.

5. Use Cinnamon

Both cinnamon and cloves are effective ways to get rid of ants. The ants hate the strong smells of these spices. Hanging some near your home’s entrances and where the ants get in will discourage them from approaching your home. Plus, it will make your home smell wonderful!

6. Use Cayenne Pepper or Black Pepper

Ants also dislike pepper. Think of them as an animal with a sweet tooth, who hate pretty much any other strong flavour. You can use regular black pepper or cayenne pepper, as long as it has a strong pepper-y smell it should work.

As with the lemons and vinegar, you can mix the pepper with water and then spray it around any areas where you think ants might be entering. Or near areas where you have seen them, but that you would like them to stay away from.

You can also spread some pepper around your house without mixing it with water, it will work just as well.

7. Chalk

Chalk is another thing that ants don’t like. They don’t like it because they don’t like the calcium carbonate that it contains.

As with the other items on this list, all you have to do is spread some around the areas where you think ants may be getting in, or just around the corners of your house. This time, you should not be mixing the chalk with water – that would create an icky paste. Instead, spread some chalk powder around key points.

8. Salt

Ants also hate salt. This is great news for us because salt is incredibly cheap. In fact, salt is one of the cheapest ways to get rid of ants.

As with many of the previous items in this list, you should make a mixture of salt and water. To do this, you will need to boil the salt into the water. After, you can spray the mixture anywhere where the ants may be getting in.
