7 Guidelines to Determine If You Should Have a Tummy Tuck

You probably already know that not everyone is a good candidate for all plastic surgery procedures. This is true for tummy tuck surgery. If you are considering getting a tummy tuck, these 7 tips will help determine if you could be a good candidate.

1. You have achieved your ideal weight

To be a good candidate for a tummy tuck, you need to have already achieved your ideal weight. A tummy tuck is not a substitute for weight loss, so if you still have some weight you want to get rid of, you will need to focus on this first. A liposuction could also be considered.

2. You have excessive loose skin

A tummy tuck is ideal for people who have excessive loose skin, and want to achieve a flat and firm abdomen. A tummy tuck can also be the right procedure for you if your belly overhangs, if you have an abdominal crease, or if you have wrinkled skin on your tummy. Tummy tucks can solve all of these issues.

3. You are healthy or you can commit to becoming healthier

If you are healthy, you are probably a good candidate for a tummy tuck. If your health condition could be improved, you will need to complete the physical workout recommended by your doctor or by your plastic surgeon. To be a good candidate, you also need to be able to stop taking any blood thinning medication before the procedure.

4. You don’t smoke or you are ready to stop smoking

It’s recommended to stop smoking before a tummy tuck, as smoking can make it more difficult for surgical wounds to heal properly. If you don’t smoke, or if you are ready to do what you can to stop smoking, you are a good candidate for this procedure.

5. You will be able to take enough time off to recover

It’s impossible to go back to work and to your daily chores immediately after a tummy tuck. You will need two or three weeks to fully recover, so if you know that you will not be able to take enough time off for that, a tummy tuck might not be right for you at the moment.

6. You have realistic expectations for your tummy tuck

Before deciding you want a tummy tuck, you also need to be aware of what a tummy tuck can do, and of what it can’t do. A tummy tuck will make you feel more comfortable in your skin, but it will not solve any other problem you might have in your life. You need to have realistic expectations.

7. You have consulted a certified plastic surgeon

These tips can help you determine if you could be a good candidate for a tummy tuck, but the only way to know for sure it to discuss with a plastic surgeon who will review your medical history, ask you about any medication you are taking, and tell you more about the procedure.
