Renting a vehicle is often a necessary step when you are on vacation. However, with financial obligations such as flights, hotels, and meals causing you to spend a lot of money already, you want to save on costs if possible. Below are ways to save when renting a car, allowing you to have money for other things while on vacation.
1. Book online
In this current age of technology, booking a car rental online can be done with a few clicks of a mouse in the comfort of your own home. However, the convenience factor is not the only reason why you should do it.
When you go online to book a car, you are given access to aggregate websites. These are sites that bring the prices of all major rental companies together. You can enter in your dates and preferred type of vehicle and prices from all companies are displayed. That way, you can compare them, guaranteeing you get the best deal possible.
2. Pass on insurance
Having insurance is beneficial because it covers the costs to repair any issues or damage to the vehicle when you are in possession. As a result, many people opt to purchase it when renting a vehicle. However, what many people do not know is that they are probably already adequately covered.
Before purchasing insurance through the rental company, determine if you already have coverage. Many times, drivers are already insured through their banks or credit card companies. In order for insurance through a credit card to activate, you need to pay for the rental with this method of payment. Home and auto insurance policies also may cover rentals as well so reviewing these would be beneficial as well.
3. Do not rent at airports
Renting cars at airports are convenient. They are right there for you when you fly into a location and can drop off before departing. However, the convenience of doing so will cost you a significant amount of money in the long run as companies place premiums on cars rented at airports.
Instead of paying extravagant fees renting at an airport, take public transportation or rent a taxi to rent at a location outside of the airport. Alternatively, check in to your hotel and walk to a rental car company to pick up your car. Doing so will save you a lot of money that you can then put towards meals, souvenirs, and activities during your stay.
4. Get gas before drop-off
When you rent a car, the company will expect you to either bring it back with as much gasoline as you left with or pay for the amount it takes to get it back to that level. Because companies charge two to three times what it costs to put gas in at a station, it is recommended that you choose the first option.
Before leaving the rental company lot, take note of how much gas is in the vehicle. That way you know how much to have in the tank when you drop off. Before returning the vehicle, try your best to fill it to this level.
5. Cash in on perks
Many people make the mistake of renting a vehicle without checking in to see what discounts they quality for. Larger rental companies often offer them and they can save you a noticeable amount of money.
Before renting a vehicle, check into what discounts the company typically offers to determine whether you qualify. These include being an alumni, member of an automobile association, or union. Some companies also have deals with hotels so check in with where you are staying to see if they can point you in the right right direction.
