5 Steps to Find a Nursing Home for Your Relatives

Despite the latest efforts to keep more aging Canadians in their own homes, sometimes it is critical to transition them to a nursing home. Whether it’s their age or poor health, nursing homes can serve as sublime locations for older people.

Of course, it is difficult for family members to accept the move, even if it is an order that came from the mouth and pen of a family doctor. But, if you do your due diligence, you can find the best nursing home tailored to the needs of your senior relatives.

Everything from referrals to family collaboration, there are many things you can do to make sure that you are giving your loved ones the appropriate accommodations in their winter years.

Here are five tips for selecting the right nursing home for aging relatives:

1. You Need to be Realistic

In today’s growing elderly population, the healthcare industry is becoming increasingly under pressure. Remember, nearly all of the Baby Boomers will hit retirement in a couple of years.

With this in mind, as you scour the marketplace for the best nursing homes, you need to be realistic. Otherwise, you will be disappointed and you will feel guilt about placing your aging parent into these facilities.

There is one particular area you need to pay attention to: 24-hour care.

Some nursing homes will offer 24-hour nursing care, but this is a bit misleading. It is true that they offer 24-hour care, but it doesn’t mean that they provide 24-hour, one-on-one care. Indeed, the individual’s basic health needs will be met, but there won’t be premium services.

Many nursing homes do their best, but they are already pushed to the limit.

2. Personally Meet with the Staff

For the remainder of their winter years, your mother or father, aunt or uncle will be under the care of professional staff members. You are entrusting them with a great responsibility.

Do you want peace of mind? That’s simple: personally meet with the employees.

If you book an appointment and talk to all of the staff members, you be rest assured that your senior family member is being taken care of by the best of the best.

3. Ask for Recommendations from Trusted Sources

Unsure where to find a nursing home? Perhaps you should ask for recommendations from trusted sources, such as your family doctor, friends who have used nursing homes, or healthcare providers. It can be a daunting task to find a suitable nursing home, but it can be done.

In addition to the referrals, it would also be a good idea to read reviews, check the star ratings, and peruse the testimonials. These will provide additional and necessary information.

4. Ensure the Facility is Close to Family

If a nursing home is located at a far distance, it can be a lot harder for family members and close friends to visit the facility. We all lead busy lives, and some people don’t own an automobile.

That said, when you’re trying to find a nursing home, one of the criteria should be to ensure it is close to family. Let’s say, if you live in the Kanata or Ottawa areas, you can move your relatives into the nearby Red Oak Retirement Residence. By doing this, you can allow family members to regularly pay a visit, drop by, show the grandchildren, and spend some time with them.

Otherwise, your aging relative will feel isolated and alone since no one is visiting them.

5. Collaborate with Loved Ones During Process

When you decide to place your older parents into a nursing home, this should be a collaborative process. You should be not a lone wolf and doing everything on your own.

Not only would it be better to partner with your senior family member, but it would also be great if you worked with your entire family. This eases the pressure and strain and allows everyone to have a say. Who knows? Perhaps they can pitch in as well!

Although more seniors are staying in the comfort of their homes and receiving the proper care and attention, sometimes it is essential that older Canadians transition to a nursing home. These establishments have the equipment, the staff, and the facilities to correctly care for patients.

Plus, considering just how busy the sandwich generation has become, nursing homes alleviate the emotions, stress, and headaches that come with caring for sick relatives.
