4 Essential Air Conditioning Maintenance Guidelines

It’s the time of year when you probably have your air conditioner working overtime. Heatwaves are sweeping across the nation and everyone needs a cooling unit they can count on.

That being said, although you may have thought you made a reasonable investment when you purchased an air conditioner of a certain capacity, sometimes extensive use can wear a machine out more quickly than anticipated. Luckily, there are experts on hand to help you fix your current unit and provide you with some tips and advice to ensure that you don’t run into problems again down the road.

1. Don’t ignore the need for repair

First things first, it is important to pay attention to the early signs that your machine might be in need of a little extra attention. Did you know that air conditioners, fans, and related equipment are a leading case of fires reported in homes? These fires are generally caused by mechanical or electrical failures that could have been prevented if serviced in time. Health problems are another issue at play when dealing with a dysfunctional air conditioner.

Units that are poorly maintained can promote ill-health and increase the spread of disease.  If something doesn’t seem to be working (or sounding) right, it is better to get an expert in to figure out what is going on. Otherwise, you risk compromising the whole system, or facing an even more serious outcome.

2. Keep efficiency high

Leaky ducts are a common problem that can prevent air conditioners from working at full capacity and can ultimately end up in much higher energy bills. In fact, duct leakage can zap up to 40% of the energy from an air conditioner. You can also significantly impact the pressure on your air conditioner by reducing the internally generated loads that your air conditioner has to deal with.

You can have a big impact on this by making sure that your home is properly insulated and that you are taking additional steps to ensure you’re doing what you can to keep it cool. Shading windows and using ‘cool’ roofing can go a long way to taking the load off your cooling unit. That being said, AC systems do need a certain amount of airflow to function properly, so avoid shutting interior doors, opting to keep them ajar instead.

3. Finding the right person for the job

Whether you’ve already found yourself in the dire situation of needing repair help ASAP, or you’re trying to take some preventative measures, there are a few tips to keep in mind that can help you find the right person for the job.

Basically, you want to find an air conditioning service with as much experience as possible, such as Climate Experts. Due to the fact that there are many different makes and models of air conditioners on the market, you want someone who is more likely to have previously encountered the type of problem you’re experiencing. Ask about what kind of systems they have experience with, whether they have a particular area of expertise, and what kind of education or training they have recently pursued in order to keep up to date.

4. To your part to keep your AC unit in good shape

Generally, air conditioners come equipped with filters that help to remove dust and other allergens from the air. As the designs have become refined, most cooling units have a simple filter that slides out and can be easily cleaned. By cleaning the filter on a regular basis, you will ensure that your unit is running at maximum efficiency and will extend the service life of your air conditioner.
