4 Design Benefits of Slate Roofs

The roof on your home is important because it is responsible for deflecting weather elements such as wind, rain, and snow and keeping it out of the interior of the house. With such a huge job, you definitely do not want to take a chance on what materials you use when installing your roof.

While asphalt shingles have been the front runner for many years because of their variety, affordability, and easy maintenance, many other materials have arrived on the scene and have increased in popularity. One of these is slate. Slate consists of rock that has been sliced into thin pieces and there are many benefits to using it for the roof of your home.

1. Long-lasting

Asphalt shingles have historically been the roofing material of choice for many homeowners mainly because the fact that they last 25 to 30 years before replacement needed was considered impressive and there were a lack of other options. However, with other choices now available for roofing comes even more longevity.

Slate roofing materials are a desirable option because although will cost you more in the long run, they have proven to last over 100 years. This means that you will not have to replace your roof again in your lifetime. This is a significant step up from other materials that will only last you a few decades, meaning you may have to replace your roof multiple times if you use them.

2. Elegant

Some people envision a boring, grey rock when they think of slate and this would transfer over to their homes if they had a slate roof installed. However, although slate is rock, a homeowner is afforded a variety of options when they choose this material for their roof.

Slate roofing comes in many different designs and colours. Shades include grey, blue, red, brown, green, and multi-colour, ensuring that you find one that will match the rest of your home perfectly. Homes that have slate roofs installed immediately become more attractive and desirable to others. They match any home no matter what its architectural style is, meaning you will not have to worry if it will look bad or out-of-place.

3. Durable

Your roof is responsible for protecting your house. While you would never neglect it, you also do not want to fuss over it and spend most of your spare time maintaining and repairing it.

Slate roofs are known to be strong, able to withstand elements such as high winds, rain, and snow. In addition, the slate is also very fire-resistant, allowing you to save noticeably on your house insurance policy because your house will be less prone to catching fire. As mentioned, these types of roofs last for over 100 years but in the event a piece of your roof does fall off, it can easily be repaired or replaced by a licenced roofer.

4. Eco-friendly

Roofing materials account for approximately 5 to 10 percent of all waste in landfill sites. Therefore, steps should be taken whenever possible to reduce the amount added. Luckily, having a slate roof installed will allow you to do your part to help the environment which is more important to people more now than ever before.

Because a slate roof will last for over a century before replacement is necessary, old materials will not need to be disposed of very often at all. When producing slate roofing materials, no chemicals or artificial materials are used and no fuel needs to be burned during the manufacturing process. This means that the materials do not give off any harmful fuels and no emissions were released when making them that could harm the environment.
